Newport News, Virginia

Newport News is an independent city in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia. It is at the south-western end of the Virginia Peninsula, on the north shore of the James River extending southeast from Skiffe's Creek along many miles of waterfront to the river's mouth at Newport News Point on the harbor of Hampton Roads.

The area known as Newport News was part of Warwick County, one of the eight original shires of Virginia formed by the House of Burgesses in the British Colony of Virginia by order of King Charles I in 1634. The county was largely composed of farms and undeveloped land until almost 250 years later. Newport News is part of the larger metropolitan area called Hampton Roads Virginia. Hampton Roads begins east of Richmond Virginia and runs east to the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The North south boundaries are the Chesapeake Bay to the city of Franklin. Encompassed in this 2500 square mile area are the 9 metropolitan cities of Newport News , Hampton, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and 6 counties. The population base of Hampton Roads is 1.6 million people. The areas economy is strongly influenced and supported by the military, Army, Navy, Air Force, and shipbuilding with Norththrup Grunman Shipyard and Norfolk Naval Shipyard . Because the area is surrounded by water tourism and the seafood industry are intrenched in the rich cultural history of the area.
